New Year New You "Holistic Health Triangle"
What better way to start the new year than with a new commitment to your own health, wellness and vitality? Science tells us that a "triangle of health" exists to fall back on when our world seems our of order...exercise, nutrition, and sleep are the three elements to rock between for a mindful mind/body experience.
Make exercise part of what brings you happiness. Science tells us it always creates happy chemicals that rush everywhere from the brain to the feet so let it help you do the work of changing your life. All you have to do is figure out a way to show up for it. The game is to end any exercise sesh feeling like you won so you'll keep coming back. The behavior of showing up for yourself is more important than the individual workout. If you set the bar too high, you won't keep coming back so... make small changes that make you more mindful of your body. It will reward you with better sleep, elevated moods and healthier nutrition choices. It won't be an arduous task that has to break through your mind's resistance if you make friends with your body. Simplify the process by pushing yourself for 10-45 minutes three days a week or walking with a friend for three days a week or hanging out in yoga class at the back of the room doing whatever feels like a "commitment" to your body. Just move it and let it tell you what it wants.
Keeping a good relationship with nutrition is easier once you can pin down what creates your need for food. Food can create energy, of course, but you may find, as I have, that the less you eat, the better you feel. For the new year, try intermittent fasting for a simple cleansing of your gut and your time. https://www.nerdfitness.com/blog/a-beginners-guide-to-intermittent-fasting/ Whether you're trying to lose weight or just simplifying your day as a new year's goal, nothing kick starts the process like not eating from the time you wake up until lunch time and finishing your last feed before 8:00pm. That will give your body a 16 hour fast to reboot itself and a feeding window of 8 hours which will likely lessen the time invested pondering what to eat. Drink water all day, however to wash away environmental toxins and to help clear your internal systems.
Sleep science is everywhere because the importance of it for mental and physical health is profound. https://jamesclear.com/sleep#How Much Sleep Do You Need? Eight hours of sleep is the highly recommended dosage and the hours between 10:00 and 12:00 are called the "double golden hours"...meaning, any sleep you can fall into between 10:00pm and 12:00 midnight, you earn double points of renewal. If, like me, you are more of a seven hour sleeper, no worries, fill that extra morning hour with meditation time and you'll start the day knowing you're a sleep and meditation guru before you even get out of bed.
